We held a two-person exhibition, “Kuku Setsu”, featuring Kansuke Fujii and Ren Fujii, at the YumeKoubou booth within the Kyoto Antique Fair.

藤井勘圿の代表作のひとつである「マシラシリーズ」
京都嵐山にある岩田山に住んでいる猿の姿を描いたものです。ご自身のライフワークとして現地へ出かけ、スケッチを続けてきたその作品は、さまざまな姿や表情が自然体で捉えられています。猿たちは人間と同じように喜怒哀楽を持つ表情豊かな動物なんだなと今さらながら改めて気づかされます。岩田山で描いた和紙がそのまま作品となっているので、現地での汚れやシミがその場の空気感も伝えてくれます。夏場に続く真夏日では、屋外での制作作業も思うようにいかないと、困り顔をされてました。
その他にも、蓮の花、椿、心象人物など、彼が描く手法は複雑で奥深いけれど、私たちは見たままを素直に受け入れられる不思議な軽やかさを備えています。
One of Kansuke Fujii’s representative works is the “Mashira Series,” which depicts the monkeys living on Iwatayama in Arashiyama, Kyoto.
As part of his life’s work, Fujii has continued visiting the site and sketching the monkeys, capturing their natural postures and expressions in an unpretentious, lifelike way. Through these works, we are reminded once again that monkeys are animals rich in emotion—expressing joy, anger, sorrow, and pleasure much like humans do. The Japanese paper (washi) he used on-site in Iwatayama becomes the artwork itself, carrying with it the stains and marks of the environment—conveying the very atmosphere of the place. During the midsummer heat, when the scorching days continued, he often found it difficult to work outdoors, wearing a slightly troubled expression. In addition to the monkeys, Fujii also paints lotus flowers, camellias, and imaginary human figures. Though his methods are intricate and profound, his works possess a mysterious lightness that allows us to accept what we see with simple, genuine ease.
植物や小さな生き物をモチーフにした作品を得意とする藤井蓮は、見たものをただ絵筆で描くのではなく、貼り絵技法で制作されています。貼り絵で使う紙は自ら着色して作っておられます。手作りの色紙は、微妙に表情が違って重なるごとに深みある景色が浮かび上がってきます。よく描かれるモチーフの一つは金魚。とぼけたような顔つき、美しいだけじゃない色合い、作家の丁寧で穏やかな人柄が手に取るように分かります。彼の目に映る植物や生き物は、優しく私たちに届いてきます。
Ren Fujii, known for his works featuring plants and small creatures, does not simply paint what he sees with a brush — instead, he creates his works using the collage technique. The papers used for his collages are hand-dyed by the artist himself. Each handmade sheet of colored paper carries subtle variations in tone, and as they overlap, a scene of rich depth and atmosphere emerges. One of his most frequently depicted motifs is the goldfish. With their slightly comical expressions and colors that are more than just beautiful, his goldfish reflect the artist’s gentle and meticulous personality. The plants and creatures seen through his eyes reach us softly, carrying a quiet tenderness.
