四代田辺竹雲斎展「竹と土について」

2026年6月8日より夢工房京都店にて、四代田辺竹雲斎展【共生 - Symbiosis】を開催しております。

四代竹雲斎が新たなテーマとして「共生（Symbiosis）」を掲げたのは2025年のことです。それまでの制作では、「つながり」や「循環」といった竹そのものの本質に着目し、その生命力や在り方を表現してきました。

さらなる竹の可能性を探求するなかで辿り着いたのが、「他者との関わり」に目を向けるという新たな視点でした。竹だけで完結するのではなく、異なる存在と響き合い、ともに在ること。その探求から生まれたテーマが「共生」であり、彼がその相手として選んだ素材が土でした。

竹と土は、古くから互いを支え合ってきた存在です。土が竹を育み、竹は土を守る。その関係は一方通行ではなく、絶えず影響を与え合う循環のなかにあります。四代竹雲斎が見出した「共生」とは、まさにそうした関係性そのものを指しているのかもしれません。

とはいえ、こうした関係性を作品として表現することは容易ではありませんでした。どのような土を用いるのか、土と水の配合、色彩や厚みをどう調整するのか。そして何より、竹と土を一体の造形として成立させるには多くの課題がありました。四代竹雲斎は試行錯誤を重ねるなかで、「竹小舞」と呼ばれる日本の伝統的な建築技法に着目します。竹を下地として土を支えるこの知恵を応用することで、作品に必要な強度と耐久性を実現し、これまでの制作には見られなかった新たな表現を生み出したのです。

It was in 2025 that Chikuunsai Ⅳ introduced Symbiosis as a new theme in his artistic practice. Until then, his work had focused on the intrinsic nature of bamboo itself—its interconnectedness and cyclical existence—expressing its vitality and essence through form.

In seeking to further explore the possibilities of bamboo, he arrived at a new perspective: an awareness of its relationship with another presence. Rather than allowing bamboo to exist in isolation, he turned his attention to the idea of different entities resonating with and coexisting alongside one another. From this exploration emerged the theme of Symbiosis, and the material he chose as bamboo’s counterpart was earth.

Bamboo and earth have long sustained one another. The earth nourishes bamboo, while bamboo protects the soil. Their relationship is not one-sided; rather, it exists within a continuous cycle of mutual influence. The Symbiosis that Chikuunsai Ⅳ discovered may be understood as an expression of precisely this kind of relationship.

Yet translating such a relationship into a work of art was far from simple. Questions arose at every stage: what kind of earth should be used, how should the proportions of earth and water be balanced, how could color and thickness be controlled? Above all, there was the challenge of creating a unified form from two fundamentally different materials.

Through extensive experimentation, Chikuunsai Ⅳ turned to Takekomai, a traditional Japanese construction technique in which bamboo latticework serves as a foundation for earthen walls. By adapting this time-honored method, he achieved the strength and durability required for the works, giving rise to a unique mode of expression unlike anything in his previous practice.
