Following his presentation at Art Central Hong Kong 2026, Yumekoubou Gallery is pleased to present works by Japanese ceramic artist Kazuya Furutani at its Hong Kong gallery from May 5.
Furutani has long centered his practice on Shigaraki ware and wood firing in an anagama kiln. At temperatures exceeding 1300°C, clay transforms through its encounter with fire, ash, and currents of air. The surfaces of his works are marked by natural ash deposits and traces of flame, while fissures emerge under heat and pressure. In his practice, “rupture” does not signify an end, but rather an unfinished state — like vibrations and the sound of cracking from within a shell, suggesting the imminent emergence of something newly born.
This Hong Kong exhibition allows these forms, born in fire, to be encountered and felt anew in another space. We warmly invite those who felt a resonance with Furutani’s works at Art Central, as well as all who are interested in his practice, to visit the gallery and come closer to works that take shape through rupture.
